What is Kiwi Karma?

Kiwi Karma is an easy way for you to support your favourite charity, simply by doing what you were going to do anyway.

We’ve partnered up with over 3200 accommodation providers and contribute 5-8% of the room rate to your nominated charity.

Because accommodation providers pay a commission to websites similar to ours, this comes at no extra cost to the traveller.

Who is Kiwi Karma?

Kiwi Karma is the brainchild of Craig Crestani, Vice President of SKAL New Zealand – a worldwide tourism networking organisation, and his wife Shelley from Crestani Communications - an experienced communications consultant with charity-sector clients.

The company is based in Wellington, and is 100% New Zealand-owned.

Kiwi Karma’s reservation system is powered by BookIt (a system owned and operated by Trade Me Limited).

Will I pay more if I book my accommodation through Kiwi Karma?

The room rates on Kiwi Karma should be the same as all other travel websites. However no website can claim to carry the best rate 100% of the time. 

How do I choose my charity?

Our charity partners are listed under the 'Charities' section on the header.

When you confirm your reservation, there is a field where you enter the charity. The charity then receives a regular bulk payment from us.

How do I pay for my booking?

We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express and China UnionPay payments for bookings made on Kiwi Karma. Bookings will be instantly confirmed, except for bookings that are marked with an orange triangle, which are subject to manual confirmation.

You will note when you receive your credit card statement that your payment went to BookIt.

What happens if a booking is "subject to confirmation"?

Nights marked on the calendar with an orange triangle are subject to confirmation by the accommodation provider. Providers should confirm or decline your booking within 24 hours and your credit card will not be charged until the booking is confirmed. Choose a night that doesn't have the orange triangle and your booking will confirm instantly.

What if I don't receive my booking confirmation email?

Check your spam and junk mail filters in your inbox in case your email from Kiwi Karma/BookIt got lost in transit. Add Kiwi Karma and BookIt to your contacts list to ensure future emails from us are not blocked.

If you still can't find your confirmation advice, simply email us at admin@kiwikarma.co.nz and we will send you a copy.

What if I want to change or cancel my booking?

If you need to cancel or make changes to your booking, please email support@bookit.co.nz  or admin@kiwikarma.co.nz (please include your booking number as your reference).

A non-refundable fee of NZD$20 applies to all cancellations regardless of the accommodation provider's cancellation policy.

Please note that accommodation providers' cancellation policies may differ but you will be prompted to review these policies before confirming your booking.

Where you are entitled to a refund, the refund will be made to the same credit card that you used to confirm the booking. You will note that when you receive your credit card statement, your payment was refunded by BookIt.

Can I use Kiwi Karma if I'm living outside of New Zealand?

Yes. We treat all of customers as if they are locals.

I’m looking for a particular accommodation provider – but it is not listed on Kiwi Karma?

If you would like a particular hotel/motel to join Kiwi Karma, email us on admin@kiwikarma.co.nz  and we will contact them about joining this great scheme.

I’m looking for a particular charity – but it is not listed on Kiwi Karma?

Unfortunately we cannot list all of New Zealand’s 25,000 charities and hope to give a meaningful donation to all of them. Hopefully you can find a suitable alternative from our list.

Can I claim the tax back on the donated amount?

Unfortunately not, as payment is made by Kiwi Karma so therefore not tax deductible.

Is my personal information safe – Will my details be forwarded to the charity I choose to support?

Kiwi Karma is committed to protecting your privacy and therefore does not provide details about individual donors to our charities.

Why do I need JavaScript (active scripting) enabled in my web browser?

JavaScript or active scripting provides the functionality for several of Kiwi Karma's key features, including the region selection form, and the calculation of room, adult and child numbers on the booking page. Without JavaScript enabled, you will not be able to complete your Kiwi Karma booking. Why do I need session cookies enabled in my web browser?

A cookie is a file created by a website to store information on your computer. Our online booking system uses session cookies to temporarily store information during the booking process. These cookies are only saved on your computer, and can only be read by the Kiwi Karma website. They are destroyed when you complete your booking, or when you close your web browser.
