Coeliac disease is an auto immune disorder that affects 1 in 70 New Zealanders (approx. 65,000) – however approximately 80% of those affected, do not know they have it. Coeliac New Zealand (CNZ) is the only NZ charity representing and advocating for people diagnosed with coeliac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis or following a medically advised gluten free diet.
Coeliac disease is a reaction to gluten that prevents the body’s absorption of crucial nutrients, and results in many different symptoms of pain and discomfort which can potentially become life threatening if left undiagnosed. There is currently no cure and the only treatment is a strict, life-long gluten free diet.
By booking your hotel, motel or any other accommodation you can help CNZ raise awareness and engage with a variety of stakeholders so that people with coeliac disease are diagnosed quickly, live healthy lives and have the prospect of a cure.
CNZ provide members with a regional and national support network, and many resources that can help them cope with adjusting to a gluten free lifestyle. CNZ work closely with health professionals and organisations on matters crucial to furthering the well being of members, food manufacturers and retailers to further the amount and quality of gluten free products available in the market, as well as informing and educating the general public. CNZ also works and to improve best practice in eateries, to make eating out safe for those with coeliac disease.
