The Arts Centre of Christchurch is an iconic collection of 23 heritage buildings constructed in Gothic Revival style. For over a century, the site was home to Canterbury College, later the University of Canterbury. Since 1978, the site has been held in Trust for the benefit of the people of Canterbury and New Zealand as a place where arts, culture and education are fostered promoted and celebrated.
In 2011 the devastating Canterbury earthquakes caused considerable damage throughout the site, forcing the closure of 22 of 23 buildings. Since then, we have embarked on extensive restoration programmes – one of the world’s biggest heritage restoration projects – with a vision to create a vibrant hub once more in the heart of the city.
